Isa and the Filthy Tongues
Sat 30, 7pm, Cabaret Voltaire, 36 Blair Street, Edinburgh, £6.50, 0131 220 6176
In a hometown show for the alt-indie reprobates, Isa and the Filthy Tongues ply their trade in a sleazy alternative blues-rock racket which has to reach up to drag itself to the gutter, though it seems instead to grab your lapel and drag you down to its lascivious level. Still, it's not such a bad place to be, with Stacey Chavis's sultry vocals serenading your gratifying fall from grace as a soundtrack fusing the Pixies and Nick Cave plays in the background. Debauched and delectable, the fearsome foursome are plying debut album Addiction, and Saturday night's show seems a suitable time to see yourself sucked in.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nine Out of Ten …

'I probably fit the profile of the average Filthy Tongues fan, age-wise at least, but I must be about the only one who knows next to nothing about predecessors Goodbye Mr MacKenzie. Their LP 'Addiction' was therefore a bolt out of the blue to me after seeing a good live show from the band and, if anything, the album is more accessible than I expected. Think poppy PJ Harvey with a couple of Pixies-esque instrumentals and you're not far away. Singer Stacey is also a formidable live presence. (Yep, they have a Myspace too)'

The Skinny 10th Nov
- Ted M Live Review
'Edinburgh's own Isa and the Filthy Tongues have also been pricking our ears up recently. Shimmering, sultry guitars and a singer that sounds a bit like Kim Gordon all contribute to their intriguing sound'

Isa & The Filthy Tongues
'Another band from Edinburgh, Isa & The Filthy Tongues have one heck of a pedigree. Martin, Kelly and Fin were previously in one of my all-time favourite bands Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, though musically it has more in common with the Mackenzie’s offshoot Angelfish, if only because they feature a female singer (American Stacey Chavis). Angelfish were fronted by another Goodbye Mr Mackenzie member, one Shirley Manson. Shirley of course went on to find fame with Garbage, but was first spotted by producer and later band mate Butch Vig, when he caught an Angelfish video on MTV. So basically, you could say Isa & The Filthy Tongues are Angelfish with a new singer. Musically though, it's a far darker affair, but with enough of a pop edge to cross-over. The Pixies immediately come to mind when you listen the their debut album 'Addiction', but other references might include Dick Dale, Blondie and Nick Cave.
